Before anything else, we just want to clarify that Helix is a brand that offers multiple models of mattresses. But for this review, we will focus on the Helix Dusk mattress. So let’s find out what this mattress has to offer for specific types of sleepers through this in-depth review.

Construction

Helix Dusk may not be as popular as Midnight but we’re about to find out how good this mattress is. So, the Helix Dusk mattress is one of the thickest bed-in-a-box mattresses on the market with 12 inches profile. Compared with traditional mattresses, this one has a hybrid construction which allows it to fit into different bed frames. Whether you want to pair it with adjustable bed frame or just a simple metal platform frame, it will do.

Just like other Helix models, the Dusk is encased in two mattress covers. The first layer is a stretchable fabric that is made of 100% polyester material which you can zip off. It is also machine washable which makes it easier to clean. Its second layer of cover is made of a jersey knit fabric which also comes in handy with its specialty cover. Looking under its cover, it got 4 layers of materials which include the Helix Dynamic Foam.

This foam provides a little bounce to the mattress. Meanwhile, its High-Grade Polyfoam serves as a transition layer to its support system for a more body-conforming layer. For its third layer, it has an innerspring unit which contains its individually-pocketed coils. This unit can conform to different body shapes to ensure your comfort. Last but not the least; Helix Dusk has the DuraDense base layer which supports the entire structure of the mattress.

Firmness

Normally, the firmness level of Helix mattresses range from 2 to 9. This is based on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. For this specific model, we can say that its firmness level is around a 6 since it has a medium feel. Its firmness level can give you a feel a decent bed where you can sleep on top. Since it’s not too firm and not too soft, it is one of the favorite feel choices among Helix mattresses.

Support

Its soft foams that feel like latex provide pressure relief as you lie down in bed. Its materials also give it a quick response so you can move better or even roll around without being stuck. Its pocketed coils assist the layers of foams on top of it with quick repositioning. Spring coils provide firmer support to the mattress while providing a bit of bounce that you can enjoy.  Specifically designed for back, stomach, and combination sleepers, the Helix Dusk mattress can support small to medium sized sleepers. If you fall under any of these categories and you like a mattress with medium feel, Dusk is worth a shot. Its second layer of foam helps provide a sturdy layer of support system. Meanwhile, its pocketed coils provide an enhanced edge support perfect for couple sleepers. You can also move better without disturbing your partner’s sleep regardless of the sleeping position you prefer. This is thanks to its motion isolation capacity while holding your spin

Temperature Regulation

Are you a hot sleeper? Don’t worry since this mattress is also designed with heat reduction properties to help you sleep better. Day or night, Helix Dusk feels cooler with its breathable mattress cover Helix Dynamic Foam. Thus, air circulates better through the mattress while you sleep to prevent trapping heat.

Casper Mattress

Best For:

  • Shoppers who want a comfortable sleep at a comfortable price
  • Sleepers who prefer to sleep on their stomach, side, back, or all
  • Anyone who wants a mattress that remains cool throughout their sleep
  • Providing neck support for different sleep positions
  • Sleeping on a cozy breeze mattress

Now that we’re done with the Helix Dusk mattress, let’s tackle the Casper mattress that we selected. For this review, we also chose one model which is the Casper Essential Mattress.

Construction

Among the Casper mattress models, the Essential mattress seems to be the most practical choice if you are a combo sleeper. Obviously, it got the basic things any sleeper would need whether you are a back, stomach, or side sleeper. This mattress has 3 layers of premium materials which make up its 11 inches profile. Checking its layers one by one, let’s start with its cover which is made of a zip-off hybrid knit weave. This cover is not just a durable protection to the mattress but also a soft layer of upholstery-grade fabric. Designed to last for years, this rich in color cover can hide any spill or stain. At last, you can enjoy a breakfast or even midnight snack in bed. Peeking inside its zip-off cover, its top layer is made of poly foam which provides a quick response to pressure. Underneath this 2 inches comfort foam is 1.5 inches memory foam which creates a slow response to any pressure. For its base foam, it contains a thick layer of high-density poly foam which enhances its overall durability. Most importantly, this 7.5 inches base layer brings shape to the mattress’ structure.

Firmness

For the firmness level, the Essential mattress from Casper is close the 6 out of 10. Thus, this also falls under the medium range category of mattresses. Thus, it can also accommodate different sleepers who don’t want a mattress that is too soft or too firm. It’s even encased in a hybrid cover which is durable but thin enough to let you feel its comfort. Its top layer of foam helps keep you on top of the mattress instead of being stuck in your spot. It doesn’t allow much sinkage compared with other foams but it can provide enough comfort to help you sleep better. Most importantly, it can fill the space along your lower back. Meanwhile, its responsive memory foam allows more sinkage and body-contouring comfort to sleepers. It can’t give you a firm bounce but it can comfort your hips and shoulders.

Support

If you’re a little heavy, this Casper mattress can give you sufficient support regardless of your favorite sleeping position. But if your weight falls under the small to medium range, you will not have a problem with this mattress. Its quick responding foam will handle your weight while its memory foam slowly adjusts to your body shape. At the same time, its denser base will provide you with a thick layer of supportive and durable foam.

Temperature Regulation

We all know how heat can be annoying, especially during the summer season. Good thing, Casper packed its Essential mattress with temperature regulation material to solve that problem. For instance, it got a breathable cover that allows better airflow through the mattress. Its top layer of foam is also placed in the middle part to reduce the heat on the mattress. In addition, its foams are designed with an open-cell construction for a cooler feeling.

Differences

Focusing on its price first, the Essential mattress costs between $395 (Twin) to $795 (California King). Meanwhile, the Dusk mattress costs between $500 (Twin) to $1,145 (California King). Obviously, Helix is the costly option while Casper is the more affordable option. But when it comes to freebies, only Helix mattress comes with 2 free Helix Dream Pillows (standard or king). The Helix mattress is also designed to offer more body-contouring pressure relief together with its “best in class” edge support. This is thanks to its featured wrapped coils which the Casper mattress lacks. This feature also adds to the height of Helix Dusk which is a bit taller than the Casper.

Verdict

To help you in your final decision, try to answer these guide questions below:

How much is your budget?

If your budget is less than $1,000 then Essential is the perfect mattress for you. But if you’re willing to spend more to get a hybrid mattress, Helix is a good choice.

Do you like eating in bed?

Eating in bed may be inappropriate for most people but we’re not here to stop you. Instead, we’ll recommend the Casper mattress with zip-off cover and charcoal color to hide your mishaps.
