Layla Mattress Product Review- 2020- Personally Tested

Layla has been causing heads to turn in the mattress industry and it’s all because of this unique twist on a bed-in-a-box mattress. It’s reversible! That’s right, each side of this mattress has a different firmness level if you need a change and want to try out something different. While some memory foam mattresses tend to retain heat, this one includes technology that can actually cool the sleeper. Sounds like the mattress you’ve been waiting for!

Founded by Akrum and Gregg Sheikh, Layla Sleep is a mattress and bedding company that is based in the U.S. The founders believe a mattress is a place for resting, rejuvenating, and recharging your body as well as your mind. Since Layla Sleep entered the market in 2016, the company has continued to amaze customers with its array of products. It has pillows, bases, sheets, weighted blankets, accessories, and of course, mattresses. Though we encourage you to check out their other products, for this review, we will focus on the most popular mattress that Layla Sleep has introduced so far. Layla Memory Foam Mattress was named “One of the Best Mattresses to Buy Online” by People, and “Best Memory Foam Mattresses 2019” by Forbes.

Recommended for Whom?

  • Arthritis patients. Many of Layla Mattress users have arthritis. However, those who suffer from other body pains can also take advantage of its benefits.
  • Hot sleepers. Its copper-infused memory foam make it feel cooler to prevent overheating and night sweats.
  • Anyone who wants an adjustable firmness setting. The Layla Mattress is not just a mattress with soft or hard firmness. It is completely unique with firmness adjusted by flipping it over.
  • Sleepers who like body-hugging memory foam. Each side of the bed has a different level of body-hugging ability.
  • Those who prefer using an adjustable base. If you have an existing adjustable base or are planning on buying one, the Layla Mattress will work for you.

Who won't like this bed?

  • Heavier sleepers. Even though it has multiple layers of foams to cradle your body, it is not enough to support heavy weight.
  • Innerspring or hybrid lovers. If you’re a fan of innerspring or hybrid mattresses that offer firmer support, this may not be the best design for you. This Layla Mattress is made of multiple layers of foams, with no additional materials.
  • Couples who need more solid edge support. The mattress can sink which is common in foam mattresses. If you want to maximize the usable space in the mattress, its edges are not as solid or supportive as some of the other options available.

How is the Mattress Constructed?

The Layla Mattress is not just any memory foam bed. It is a foam mattress that looks stunning on the outside and is special on the inside. The 10″ mattress is currently the most popular Layla Sleep mattress model. It is also the signature model of the company.

Mattress Cover

The Layla Mattress is protected by a blend of polyester cover that showcases its signature white/grey and black/grey stitched hexagonal design. This luxurious fabric provides multiple benefits from the cooling department up to its cleaning department. It is designed with a zippered enclosure to make it easier to remove and put on after cleaning it. To make sure the fabric cover lasts for years, Layla recommends dry cleaning to remove accumulated dirt and germs.

In case you’re wondering, the original version of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress requires more work to adjust its firmness. You have to remove its cover first before you can adjust its firmness then put the cover back on. But for this latest version, you simply have to flip it without worrying about the cover. Just remember to check the color of the mattress side, which indicates firmness. The lighter side feels softer while the darker side feels firmer.

Comfort Layer

As mentioned above, the Layla Mattress consists of multiple foams in a 10″ profile. Since it has 2 sides that you can interchange from time to time, this means that it has 2 comfort layers. So, let’s start with its top side which has a white and grey cover. Under this is a 3″ layer of memory foam with infused copper-gel content. This layer has deep compression areas that can cradle your body in a soft and plush feel.

Its traditional memory foam feel makes the body sink deeper into the mattress instead of staying on top while asleep. The other side of the mattress has a 1″ layer of memory foam that is also infused with copper-gel. This layer of foam also provides a body-hugging comfort but you won’t sink as deep. Compared with the thicker comfort layer on the other side of the mattress, this one is firmer. It also has a more supportive feel due to its variable support design that handles deep compression areas. Since both sides are infused with copper, both foams contain antimicrobial properties that control its odor.

Transition Layer

For the transition layer, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress has a thin material that is made of convoluted polyfoam. This 2″ layer is also known as the max airflow support foam which focuses on deep channeling the air. It is located under the memory foam to provide customized support using zoned SMT. This Surface Modification Technology or SMT serves as a buffer between the softer side and the firmer support core foam. However, the other side of the mattress doesn’t have a transition layer. Therefore, it is appropriate for heavier sleepers and those who don’t like sinking too deep since it allow less sinkage.

Support Layer

For the support layer, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress has a single layer of support core foam. It is common in flippable mattresses since both sides of the bed share the same layer. This 4″ layer is made of a high-density polyfoam that provides a steady base for the softer foams. Since one side has a thicker layer of comfort foam, it provides deeper sinkage. Regardless, it provides a minimal bounce rate on each side of the mattress.

Performance Ratings

For this section, we will find out how the Layla Memory Foam Mattress performs based on various factors. After testing the mattress and analyzing reviews from verified customers here are the details behind our rating snapshot above.

Durability

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress model is still new in the market. It was introduced in 2019. We can’t tell yet whether the mattress will last a decade or more. However, we focused on its materials, construction, and owners’ experiences as the basis for our review. This latest version has a lot of similarities with the original Layla Mattress. It has premium memory foams and other materials that provide dense support. Thus, its level of durability can make its lifespan extend from 6 – 8 years. However, this doesn’t mean that its sleep surface is not susceptible to body indentations which can still develop over time. Aside from flipping the mattress, we also recommend rotating it every quarter or at least every 6 months. This way, the chances of forming permanent body indentations are reduced. The lifespan of the comfort layers can be extended too.

Motion Isolation

Compared with other types of mattresses in the market, the Layla Mattress has pretty good motion isolation performance. This can be noticed on either side of the bed whether you sleep alone or with a partner. It has a slower response time which is one of the most common characteristics of memory foam mattresses. Still, the motion isolation of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress can be considered on par. Even though both sides are designed to get the job done, the softer side can minimize more motion transfer. Thus, it can be an appropriate choice for those who wake up easily due to motion. It is also great for couples looking for a more peaceful sleep.

Edge Support

When it comes to edge support, the Memory Foam Mattress has a fair performance. Testers tried to sit and lie on both sides of the mattress to know how they would hold up. The firmer side is less prone to sagging and sinkage compared with the softer side. This is due to its thinner barrier between the support core foam and the sleeper. We also found that both sides of the mattress are stable enough to hold the sleepers. You don’t have to worry about falling off the bed while sleeping on or near the edge. On the other hand, there is a considerable sinkage along the edges if you sit on it. Over time, this can lead to annoying sag which can make it harder to get in and out of bed.

Pressure Relief

Even though the Layla Memory Foam Mattress’s performance varies a lot depending on the testers’ weight, it still did well. Each tester lies down on a sensory pad which measures the amount of pressure build-up in different parts of the body. Each side of the mattress provides good pressure relief to testers but not equally. Lightweight and average sleepers may feel little to no additional pressure while lying on the softer side, but if they lie on the firmer side, they may experience slight pressure along their shoulders, hips, and knees. For heavyweight sleepers, they may enjoy ample pressure relief from either surface of the mattress. But for comfort, we recommend the firmer surface for heavier individuals.

Temperature Control

The last thing every sleeper wants is to wake up sweating in the middle of the night. That is why Layla designed this mattress using enhanced memory foams with temperature regulation. Unlike standard memory foam mattresses, it doesn’t trap heat. This is due to its infused copper which makes the sleeping surface feel cooler. Aside from that, its convoluted foam layer also promotes better airflow through the mattress. This layer has an egg-crate shape where air can flow better to help disperse heat instead of trapping it. But since the softer side sinks deeper and hugs the sleepers’ body, it may still trap heat. Nonetheless, we can still consider the Layla Mattress as above-average compared with hot memory foams.

Noise

Whether you are a light sleeper or not, it is worth it to invest in a quiet mattress to achieve the best sleep. In this case, the Layla Mattress is an excellent option because it doesn’t produce any disruptive sounds. It doesn’t contain coils that typically create noise in innerspring and hybrid mattresses. Since it is an all-foam bed, you can move freely around the mattress without hearing any squeaking sounds. This feature is paired with thick support core foam that minimizes the motion transfer on the entire surface.

Good for Sex

For this category, the mattress has a fair performance rating. Its layers of foams on both sides and construction slow down its response time. If you use the softer surface you can sink deep into the mattress due to its body-hugging design. Shifting in the mattress or getting in and out easily can be hindered. Switching from one sex position to another while using this mattress can be a bit difficult. If you like the traction in mattress for sex the softer side is more suitable for you. But if you prefer to switch into different positions more frequently, the firmer side may suit you more.

Mattress Rating

As mentioned above, the feel of the mattress may be different depending on the sleepers’ weight, sleeping position, and shape. To help you identify whether this all-foam mattress is ideal for you, different sleepers with different weights tested the mattress.

Light Weight – below 130 lbs

For lightweight sleepers who tested the Layla Memory Foam Mattress, it provides more cushioning and pressure relief on the softer surface. The additional padding from the transition layer or convoluted foam cushions the area along their hips and shoulders. It also helps promote spinal alignment for lightweight side sleepers.

Contrary to the softer surface or medium-soft side, the firmer side provides less pressure relief for lightweight individuals. However, this surface can still be comfortable for lighter sleepers who prefer a firmer sleeping surface for more back support.

Medium Weight – between 130 and 230 lbs

Moving on to the medium or average weight sleepers (130-230 lbs), its softer surface is more suitable for these sleepers. These mattress testers experienced body-conforming comfort from both sides of the Layla Mattress. The firm side provides great pressure relief even though there is a slight added pressure along their shoulders and hips area. Meanwhile, the softer side provides more support but less pressure for these body parts. Most average or medium weight sleepers find this versatile mattress more appealing than other all-foam mattresses.

Heavy Weight – over 230 lbs

Normally, we don’t recommend an all-foam mattress for heavyweight sleepers. This is to avoid encountering issues such as premature sagging of the mattress and an insufficient amount of support. But in the case of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress, heavyweight individuals can enjoy it as much as other users. Its flippable design allows the usage of both sides of the mattress which provides a firmer and more supportive sleeping surface. The firmer side prevents their body from sinking. This side of Layla Mattress helps align their spine better and reduce stress on pressure points while they sleep. However, some heavyweight sleepers can still enjoy the softer side as long as they love sinking deep into the mattress.

Is it Good for Stomach/Back/Side Sleepers?

Since we already shared the construction and performance of Layla Mattress, let’s move on to different sleeping positions. Aside from the size and weight of sleepers, each mattress may also feel different depending on your preferred sleeping position. A mattress is not usually one-size-fits-all. One may feel supportive for back sleepers but not for stomach or side sleepers. For instance, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress feels good for back sleepers who weigh up to 230 lbs. However, it feels only fair when it comes to lightweight side and stomach sleepers, and heavyweight back sleepers. Its softer side is not that ideal for medium to heavyweight stomach sleepers. It softer side can also feel less supportive for heavy side sleepers

How Does Layla Mattress Compare with other Brands/Products?

Layla Mattress vs. Casper Mattress

Both Layla and Casper aim to deliver the best sleep that every customer deserves. In this comparison, we will take a closer look at the offered firmness, comfort, and resilience of each mattress. Layla and Casper offer different levels of support in different areas on your body which include your shoulders and hips. However, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is designed to be more personalized compared to the Casper Mattress. Layla contains copper cells that resist against each other to provide better support the more they are compressed. The entire mattress contours to the body to ensure your needed comfort and support from the firm or soft side. On the other hand, the Casper Mattress has a Zoned Support that offers softer support on the top and bottom layers. This way, it can provide more support for your pressure points. It can also give you additional support at your knees or ankles.

Layla Mattress vs. Purple Mattress

Both Layla and Purple Mattresses come with unique technology and provide unique support and motion isolation features. The Purple Mattress has a distinct layer of material that is made of a gel grid. This is designed with open sections to disperse heat and provide support right where you need it.

Meanwhile, the Layla Mattress has an infused copper gel that provides cooling, antimicrobial, and supportive properties to the entire bed. The copper doesn’t just act as a temperature regulation solution. It also protects you and your mattress from bacteria 24/7. The Purple grid may be a cool and smart addition to the Purple Mattress but Layla beats it in hygiene. Most importantly, you can also flip and rotate it, unlike the Purple Mattress which you can only rotate.
