Quick Synopsis
We know how busy you are so we won’t keep you for long. So, here are the major differences between these two Puffy foam mattresses:
There’s a lot more to know about these Puffy mattresses. Read on to get more information about the Original and Lux mattress.
Puffy Mattress
The introduction of the Original Puffy Mattress is where it all started. It was even featured in the Ellen DeGeneres Show which gave it more exposure. So, let’s see what it got.
Construction
The Original Puffy Mattress consists of 3 layers of foams under its cover. Its 10 inches profile that is thinner than the Puffy Lux is encased in a soft mattress cover. Its blend of standard polyester and a small portion of lycra made it stretchable and resistant to stain. To make the mattress easier to clean, its Zip-N-Wash cover is also removable and machine washable. Thus, you can easily remove the buildup of dirt and germs in the cover for seasonal deep cleaning. On top of that, every Original Puffy Mattress cover is also Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified. Zipping open the mattress, Puffy used Cooling Cloud foam that is 2 inches thick for its top layer. This foam has a 2.5 PCF density for support. Unlike other regular memory foams, this layer is also optimized for temperature control by infusing it with gel microbeads. Next to this layer is a Climate Comfort Foam that is also 2 inches thick. This climate-adaptive dual cloud foam serves as the comfort and transition layer to the mattress. Thus, it can also help prevent your body from sinking too deep. Last but not least is its thickest layer of foam called Firm Core Support Foam. This 6 inches polyfoam has a 1.5 PCF density to provide body-contouring support throughout your sleep.
Puffy Has a Neutral Foam Feel
Two out of Puffy’s three layers of foams resemble some of memory foam’s qualities. However, that is not enough for it to be considered a memory foam mattress. Since its Cooling Cloud Foam is just 2 inches thick, the transition layer beneath it can be felt easily. When combined, the Cooling Cloud Layer and the Climate Comfort Foam give the Puffy a blended neutral-foam feel. These foams make the top layer a bit airy and light which makes it comfortable snuggle in. Its soft pillow-like feel also comes in handy to relieve pressure points. But since its Cooling Cloud and Climate Comfort layers are too thin, the Puffy Mattress can’t conform to your body well. Compared with the traditional memory foam mattresses and Puffy Lux, it can’t wrap your body in a soft hug. Still, its neutral-foam feel with a slight hit of memory foam is comfortable due to its layer.
Puffy Firmness Test
Despite the medium feel of the Original Puffy Mattress, the Puffy Lux is still a bit softer. Its combination of Cooling Cloud, Climate Comfort, and Firm Core Support Foams creates a nice balance of comfort and support. In other words, it feels “just right”. This allows the mattress to accommodate different types of sleepers from the side, back, stomach, and combo sleepers. The Cooling Cloud and Firm Core Support Foam are designed to adapt to your body. Moreover, these layers provide sufficient support for back and stomach sleepers as they shift in bed during their sleep. Side sleepers can also get enough pressure relief along their shoulders and hips thanks to the Cooling Cloud Foam layer.
The Original Puffy is More Affordable
After comparing the price, we noticed that the Original Puffy Mattress is more affordable than the Puffy Lux Mattress. With $300 off on its original price tags, customers are taking the opportunity to grab huge discounts. Most importantly, both models come with a free King pillow for every mattress purchase. The Original Puffy’s prices range from $495 (Twin), $525 (Twin XL), $695 (Full), $850 (Queen), to $1,050 (King and California King). Meanwhile, Puffy Lux’s prices range from $1,145 (Twin), $1,195 (Twin XL), $1,295 (Full), $1,495 (Queen), and $1,695 (King and California King).
Puffy Lux Mattress

Construction
The Puffy Lux Mattress contains materials that are similar to the Original Puffy Mattress. It is encased in an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified cover that is made of stain-resistant polyester material. Its removable Zip-N-Wash cover is also plush and cool for everyday comfort. Under the covers, the Puffy Lux Mattress contains 4 layers of foams to ensure your comfort. For its top layer, it has a Cooling Cloud Foam which serves as the comfort material. As mentioned above, this layer is made of gel-infused foam even though it is thinner. Still, it has a 2.5 PCF density to complement its Dual Cloud Foam which is also 1.5 inches thin. This plush Dual Cloud Foam is an exclusive comfort layer that is added to the Lux mattress. Most importantly, this foam is designed to conform to your body. For the primary transition layer, the Puffy Lux also has a Climate Comfort Foam to blend with its top layers. This high-density foam is 2 inches thick to help the previous layers alleviate pressure points during your sleep. As the final layer of foam, the Puffy Lux has a Firm core Support Foam that is thicker than Puffy’s Original model. It is 7 inches thick foam with 1.5 PCF density to keep your spine aligned and provide deeper pressure relief.
Puffy Lux Has a Unique Memory Foam Feel
If the Original Puffy Mattress has a blend of neutral-foam feel, the Puffy Lux has a unique memory foam feel. The Cooling Cloud Foam already has a hint of memory foam when it comes to its feel and purpose. However, the Puffy Lux has an exclusive layer of foam that is designed to reinforce the top layer. This secondary foam is more similar to the memory foam.
Therefore, it feels more like a memory foam mattress then the original model. These layers also give the mattress a light and airy memory foam feel which is less dense than other brands. Due to its memory foam feel, the Puffy Lux feels more comfortable for those who are fans of body-conforming foam. It can slowly conform to your body curves to cradle your shoulders, hips, and other pressure points. If you want a softer version of the original model, this might be the one you’re searching for. It provides a comforting sensation that is close to memory foams. Lastly, it has an advantage over the Original Puffy Mattress when it comes to edge support.
Puffy Lux is Slightly Softer than Puffy
The Puffy Lux is slightly softer than the Original Puffy Mattress. We think that its level of comfort on the firmness scale is between medium-soft and medium. This is due to its additional Dual Cloud Foam and optimized Cooling Cloud Foam. Its construction allows the mattress to accommodate sleepers in different sleeping positions. It has a Firm Core Support Foam to stabilize the mattress and 3 more foam layers to guarantee comfort. However, its firmness feels more appropriate for side sleepers since it has softer top layers to conform to your body curves. Other stomach sleepers may find it too soft also which can make their hips sink deeper. This means that their spine alignment can be affected as well and trigger back pain. At the same time, its base layer is there to help eliminate pressure points and keep your spine in proper alignment.
What Puffy and Puffy Lux Have in Common?
Aside from the mentioned differences above, the Puffy and Puffy Lux also have similarities.
Great for Couples
Having a mattress that can respond quickly is important for couples. Both models have a Firm Core Support Foam that can respond fast like memory foam. However, the top layers may take longer to pop up into its original shape. Both models also have great motion isolation. This is perfect for those who usually toss and turn and/or get up a lot in the middle of the night.
Not Ideal for Sleepers over 250 Pounds
Even though both mattresses can technically work with different sleeping positions, they still have weight limits. Both are made of foams that are less dense to hold heavyweight sleepers. Thus, we think that both models may not be the best options for those who weigh more than 250 pounds. For instance, the Original Puffy Mattress alone is suitable only for petite to average size individuals. Since the Puffy Lux is softer than the original version, heavier sleepers might sink deeper regardless if it is thicker. If heavier sleepers want to take a chance on foam mattresses, thick and medium-firm to firm mattresses might work. Still, we hybrid and innerspring mattresses feel more supportive, especially when it comes to the edge support.
Temperature Regulation
Both mattresses contain a Cooling Cloud Foam layer that can keep you at an ideal temperature. This breathable top layer is also combined with the Climate Comfort Foam that helps reduce the sudden temperature swings. Thus, you can expect the mattress to feel cool during hot nights or summer and warm during cold nights or winter.
Verdict
For the final take, here are some points that you can consider to make up your mind:
How much is your budget?
If your budget is below $1,000, the Original Puffy Mattress is a perfect choice. But if you’re willing to spend more for a thicker mattress, we recommend the Puffy Lux Mattress.
What is your preferred comfort level in a mattress?
The Original Puffy Mattress is a nice choice if you want a foam mattress with medium or neutral foam feel. However, the Puffy Lux is for those memory foam lovers who want a softer and body-contouring mattress.
