Sleep Number is one of the smartest beds in the market which come in various models and designs. There’s the Classic, Performance, Innovation Series, and Cooling Memory Foam. But for this review, we will focus only on Sleep Number 360 i10 Smart Bed from the Innovation Series.

Construction

Designed to offer a soothing and amazing sleep experience, the Sleep Number 360 i10 Smart Bed has generous combinations of layers. Its name alone says it all so there’s no wonder why many customers get attracted to its line of mattresses. With a total of 13 inches of mattress height, this bed can be customized according to each sleeper’s taste and preference. After all, customers can purchase this mattress with a smart adjustable base regardless of the size they want to buy. Not to mention because the flex top and split mattress options are available with adjustable bases only. So, let’s unveil its features by starting with its mattress cover. This is made of a combination of 16% polypropylene, 83% polyester, and 1% elastin to ensure the protection of the mattress. Also, a 7 inches tall foam that serves as the comfort layer is combined on top of these air chambers. This is made up of two different kinds of foams called Ergonomex and ThermaLux that offer body-contouring, pressure relief, and support. Compared with traditional memory foams, its ThermaLux layer doesn’t get stiff when exposed to cool temperatures. Thus, it feels better all year round even during the winter season. Underneath this ThermaLux foam is the swirl gel-infused Ergonomex foam which can contour to the body better. Below these foams is airbed with air chambers which control the softness and firmness of the mattress. These air chambers are made of 24 gauge vulcanized rubber that has a cotton fabric and connects with 4 inches hose. Finally, it has a 1-inch base pad that cushions the airbed below. Since the Sleep Number 360 i10 Bed doesn’t come with a free base so you have to buy it separately. Regardless, this mattress comes with SleepIQ technology which includes sensors inside to monitor your sleep. These sensors track your movements while you sleep so it can automatically adjust its firmness according to your needs.

Firmness

Since this bed has a layer of 7 inches foam and an airbed below, it’s a pretty soft mattress. In fact, the 360 i10 Smart Bed of Sleep Number is the softest mattress among its line of beds. Regardless of the exact model you prefer, remember that the i10 series always offers the softest beds. But if you think that you will sink into the mattress and feel trapped, think again. This mattress has a solid combination of materials from its comfy padding to its supportive air bladder. Therefore, it has a balanced softness and support that will prevent you from sinking too deep into the mattress.

Support

As mentioned above, the Sleep Number 360 i10 Smart Bed has a balanced level of softness and support. Using its SleepIQ technology, the mattress literally tracks your breathing, heart rate, and movement during your sleep. Thus, its airbed layer can also automatically adjust its amount of air inside and firmness to provide you sufficient support. Also, its solid level of support can provide you with pressure relief as its foam contours to your body. In addition, its responsive air technology collects all data and automatically sends it to your Sleep Number app. Then, the SleepIQ technology’s collected data is used to generate your sleep score which can be seen through the app. You can also see the results using other connected smart devices via Wi-Fi.

Temperature Regulation

If you worry about how your mattress can stay cool and comfortable to sleep on, Sleep Number can take care of that. The mattress itself is made of a combination of polypropylene and polyester fabrics. In case you didn’t know yet, these fabrics are known for being soft and breathable. At the same time, its temperature balancing feature absorbs heat and releases it to give you a cool feeling. Thus, you can sleep with just the right temperature that your body finds comfortable.

Purple Mattress

Best For:

  • Petite to medium and large individuals
  • Side, back, and combo sleepers
  • Anyone who wants to experience a customizable comfort
  • Sleepers who need more whole body “no pressure” support
  • Warm or hot sleepers

Just like Sleep Number, Purple also offers various models in the mattress industry. Its mattress line includes The Purple Mattress, Purple Hybrid, and Purple Hybrid Premier. In this review, we will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress.

Construction

Known as the “no-pressure” mattress from Purple, the Hybrid Premier Mattress is definitely the most innovative model from the brand. With a customizable Purple Grid layer, this mattress can help you enjoy an undisturbed sleep throughout the night. All you have to do is personalize your Purple mattress to make the most of its benefits. So, let’s find out its other layers of materials inside. To make its fabric more comfy and stretchable, Purple used a premium StretchMax cover which feels softer than the usual mattress covers. This premium fabric provides the first layer of cushioning that can eliminate pressure by adjusting to body size. Next to this cover is the layer of Purple Grid which can be 3 inches or 4 inches tall. Depending on your preferences, you can opt for the 3 inches or 4 inches thick layer Purple Grid. The Purple Grid layer can adjust to your body shape, size, and sleeping position to provide personalized support. Underneath this is 7.5 inches tall layer of responsive support coils to enhance its level of support. This coil system layer reinforces the Purple Grid and increases the overall durability of the Purple Hybrid Premier to make it last for years. To enhance its comfort and mattress structure, this mattress also has a layer of transition foam.

Firmness

Depending on the thickness of Purple Grid that you pick, the firmness of the mattress may differ. If you want a mattress that has a medium feel with about 5-6 comfort level, select the 3-inch Purple Grid. But if you want a bed that has a medium-soft feel, select the 4-inch Purple Grid with 4.5 comfort level. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 stands for the softest and 10 as the firmest mattress.

Support

When it comes to the support aspect of this Hybrid Premier Mattress, each version offers a different level of support. The thinner version with 3 inches Purple Grid is designed to offer a weightless “no pressure” support. Meanwhile, the 4 inches Purple Grid is designed to offer a zero-gravity “no pressure” support. In general, this mattress has a body-conforming surface that can absorb pressure and support the pressure points. This provides a comforting feeling while it promotes natural spinal alignment. Regardless of your body type, the Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress can give you peace of mind with its motion isolation feature. Its top layer may be responsive but its base layer eliminates the transfer of any disturbing motion across the surface. However, its comfort level is limited only if lying or sitting on the edge due to its average edge support.

Temperature regulation

If you’re worried about the overheating issue that many foam mattresses have, forget that. The hyper-elastic polymer/Purple Grid layer of this hybrid mattress can solve that problem. Compared with other beds’ cooling solutions, Purple can dynamically flex under pressure and maintain its air channels open. Therefore, its thousands of air channels inside can keep you feeling cool as they neutralize your body heat.

Differences

To make it easier for you to come up with your final verdict, we will identify spot the differences between these mattresses. So, let’s start with the construction wherein the Purple mattress is made with layers of foams and a rubber layer inside. On the other hand, the Sleep Number mattress is made of foam and an airbed layer under its cover. The second aspect we noticed is the available sizes of each mattress. Sleep Number is available only in Queen, King, Split King, FlexTop King, Cal King, Split Cal King, and FlexTop Cal King. Meanwhile, Purple is available in smaller sizes such as the Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split Cal King. Thus, Sleep Number is ideal for those who need bigger sized mattresses while Purple is ideal for single and couples. When it comes to the price category, Purple costs $1,899-$3,798 (3-inch) and $2,499-$4,998 (4-inch) while Sleep Number costs $4,399-$7,798+.

Verdict

So now, here are some points that you can use to make up your mind:

How much is your budget?

If your budget is below $3,000 only, the Purple Hybrid Premier Mattress is your best option between the two. But if you’re fine with splurging more to get a combination of foam and an airbed, Sleep Number is a great choice.

What is the comfort level that you prefer?

If you prefer a softer mattress, the Sleep Number is a great choice while Purple is for those who want a firmer bed.
